Overview
Prior to Project Execution
Before we can define Lean Six Sigma Projects, we must have developed the Strategy for the business. The long-term goals need to be defined so we can go ahead to plan what to fix in the business. Otherwise, quick wins could be generated but the goal is to have a sustainable Operational Excellence Management System that delivers long-term results.
How it works?
You can choose either PDCA or DMAIC projects for Lean Six Sigma delivery. Let's see the difference:
PDCA Projects
PDCA is a project management framework used by organizations to implement incremental change.
PDCA stands for Plan, Do, Check, and Act (Adjust). This four-step approach is the most widely used methodology for implementing continuous improvement. That is why the four steps are arranged in a circle. Let's see what each step accomplishes:
Plan is about identifying the problem or gap and then the steps needed to close that gap.
Do is about executing the plan.
Check is about comparing what was planned to what was executed.
Act or Adjust is about standardizing the outcome if the gap was closed (act) or repeating the PDCA cycle if there is still a gap (adjust).
DMAIC Projects
DMAIC is a data-driven problem-solving methodology used to reduce or eliminate variability in a process, making stable and predictable. Following the description of each phase.
Define is about determining the problem statement and selecting the process to be improved.
Measure is about defining the baseline of the process to be improved.
Analyze is about finding the root-cause of the problem to be solved.
Improve is about optimizing the process to be improved.
Control is about monitoring the sustainability of the new process.
Improvement Projects in Real Life
To set up successful PDCA or DMAIC projects, Lean Six Sigma Belts need to assess the business need and choose the process to be improved.
It is advisable to educate the whole organization in the means of achieving the goals of a Continuous Improvement Program. For this, we recommend that you get the help of experienced and seasoned business advisors which can help pave the path to success.
